She wants to be the first female Mayor in Los Angeles

For original article (in Spanish) click here.

"One, two, three, four," girls at Logan Avenue Elementary School in Echo Park are counting the beats. It is the rhythm of the dance they are performing. The beats accelerate "five, six, seven, eight." They repeat the cycle twice and stop with their faces flushed and fits of laughter.

Wendy Greuel, City Controller and Mayoral Candidate, is following their movements, with a joy that only demonstrates the close relationship she has with her only son, Thomas, age nine, the age of most of the eighteen girls who are instructing her on the moves.

"I started LA's BEST [an after-school program is offered in 189 Los Angeles schools] and wanted to see how the program I started many years ago is functioning," Greuel explains as the reason for her visit.

"You did?" asks one of the little girls amazed.

In the humble hallways Logan Elementary School, Greuel recalls her beginnings in public service, She created the initiative in 1988, under the leadership of then-Mayor Tom Bradley. She is also reunited with her goal to become the first woman mayor in the history of Los Angeles and be a motivation for women, especially for girls.

"What it means for those girls is that they can achieve, there are no barriers to reach their goals, if they want to be mayor, astronaut, lawyer, police, whatever you want. The message I'm sending is that if you do what you are meant to do and you work hard you can go far, "she says.

Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, Greuel entered the public sector during the administration of Bradley (mayor from 1973 to 1993), then worked as an advisor to the Department of Housing (HUD) and then became executive DreamWorks film company.

In 2002 she was elected to the District 2 City Council of Los Angeles and seven years later became Contoller , where, according to her calculations, she has saved more 160 million dollars to the City avoiding "fraud, waste and abuse", a figure that has been criticized.

"It's campaign silly season ," she said regarding the attacks from her main rival in the race and former political ally, Councilman Eric Garcetti. "It's funny that they're arguing over how much fraud and abuse I have found' [imitates an angry voice], because I found a lot," she says.

Earlier, the Comptroller, 51, faced questions about his alleged use of official time and personnel for electioneering. All the attacks, she says, only divert the attention of voters on the issues that really concern them.

"That sends the message that I'm leading the race," says the candidate.

Not every poll has her leading. A SurveyUSA poll released last week concludes that it has 20% of voter preferences, four points behind Garcetti. With a similar advantage to the margin of error of the study, both reach the finish line in a virtual tie. According to the survey, the comptroller has the support of whites, older and more income, while Garcetti has the support of male voters, conservatives, Latinos and Asians.

She has the support from some of the major unions in the city, helping her to be the first candidate with a TV ad. Without being subject to donation limits, the contributions of the group will give a financial boost to her campaign, which has already raised $ 3.6 million.

"As mayor I want to see a city that allows us all to achieve our dreams, no matter where you live or your income level, you have the same opportunities, "said Greuel.

Before leaving Logan Elementary, in a class where they make shapes with marshmallows and spaghetti, a girl listening to the Greuel's story about creating LA's BEST, says she will vote for her. "You can't vote " Greuel says. "until you turn eighteen."

Important API Law Enforcement Association Gives Greuel the Nod

LOS ANGELES, CA – Fueling her campaign with more momentum, today Wendy Greuel won another law enforcement endorsement with the announcement that the Law Enforcement Association of Asian Pacifics (LEAAP) is backing her campaign for Mayor.

Today’s endorsement comes on the heels of Greuel’s recent public safety endorsements from the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) and the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC) Local 112.

Just yesterday, Greuel was joined by firefighters as she announced her public safety plan to keep the city’s residents safe.

“Los Angeles needs a Mayor who puts public safety first,” said Jen Wong, President of LEAAP. “That candidate is Wendy Greuel. Wendy has demonstrated her ability to deliver results for all of Los Angeles, and as Mayor, we’re confident she’ll make sure residents in every neighborhood have ample police and fire protection. We are proud to join the ranks of other law enforcement groups in announcing our strong support of Wendy Greuel for Mayor of Los Angeles.”

LEAAP is a 20-year-old organization that represents law enforcement officers at the municipal, county, state, and federal level. LEAAP exists under the National Asian Peace Officers Association.

“I'll be a Mayor for all of Los Angeles. That means prioritizing every neighborhood and making sure communities across the city are safe,” said Greuel. “This endorsement is a testament to the growing support for my campaign among law enforcement and public safety groups throughout Los Angeles. With less than a month before the primary election, this endorsement comes at a key time in the campaign. I really appreciate the support of the Law Enforcement Association of Asian Pacifics.”

Wendy Greuel Captures Endorsement from the Powerful Valley Industry & Commerce Association (VICA) PAC

LOS ANGELES, CA – Demonstrating her dynamic and wide ranging support, today Wendy Greuel received a highly sought-after endorsement from the Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) PAC.

VICA is widely considered one of the most influential business advocacy organizations in Southern California. VICA's mission is to enhance the economic vitality of the greater San Fernando Valley region by advocating for a better business climate and quality of life.

“The Valley needs a Mayor who understands how businesses work and what businesses need to grow and flourish,” said Stuart Waldman, President of VICA PAC. “Wendy Greuel is the only candidate for Mayor with small and big business experience. As a small business owner, she has a deep knowledge of the struggles businesses go through to stay afloat. And her experience as an executive in the entertainment industry at DreamWorks has provided her with a keen insight for what Hollywood needs to stay in L.A., instead of running away. As Mayor, we are confident that Wendy Greuel will strengthen our economy by making Los Angeles more business friendly. We are proud to give Wendy our strong endorsement.”

“I’m running for Mayor to bring entertainment, hi-tech, clean energy, and good paying jobs back to Los Angeles,” said Greuel. “We can make our city an economic hub again by bringing businesses back so they can create more job opportunities for our residents. First, we need to create a sustainable and lucrative business environment that makes it beneficial for businesses to stay here, or come here from somewhere else. Next, we need to develop job training programs and help connect people to jobs by partnering with local business and colleges. We also need to improve our city's aging infrastructure, attract more entrepreneurs to LA, and streamline and consolidate the City's economic development efforts so the City can attract and retain more businesses."

Greuel added, “VICA PAC’s endorsement comes at a crucial time in this campaign. Their support illustrates the broad coalition of support I’ve built as we approach the March 5th primary. I am grateful for their support.”

Recently Greuel has received a major momentum surge with endorsements from several law enforcement and public safety groups, including the Law Enforcement Association of Asian Pacifics (LEAAP), the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) and the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC) Local 112.

Greuel Scores Endorsement from California’s 3rd largest Newspaper Group

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Los Angeles Newspaper Group editorial board has endorsed Wendy Greuel for mayor.

With an average weekday readership of 1,487,410, LANG ranks 6th in the nation. Its newspapers include the Los Angeles Daily News, the Daily Breeze, the Long Beach Press Telegram, the Pasadena Star-News, and the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

The endorsement comes on the same day that Greuel earned the backing of the influential Valley Industry and Commerce Association PAC.

In their editorial, LANG said: “Which candidate has the strongest combination of qualifications, political skill and personal character? Which of the eight people on the ballot can best represent city residents' diverse interests? Which man or woman has the best chance to lead L.A. back from the fiscal brink? This newspaper's editorial board has weighed those questions and found a clear answer. It's Wendy Greuel.

"Greuel, the city controller and former city councilwoman who worked in the Clinton administration, is the only candidate who has held citywide office and served in government outside the flawed culture of L.A. City Hall. She is the only candidate who has valuable experience in private business along with a government resume, having been an executive in the entertainment industry for five years before her City Council stint. She has received not only much-scrutinized endorsements from labor unions but also support from important business leaders…

“…It should be her. We believe Greuel would make L.A. proud as the first woman to lead the nation's second most populous city. She has the combination of experience, know-how and personal qualities to be a fine mayor.”

Read the full editorial here.

“I am so honored to earn the endorsement of the Los Angeles News Group editorial board,” said Greuel. “LANG is one of the most respected and trusted media organizations in California, and their endorsement is a powerful statement of support for our campaign. I’ll be a mayor for all of Los Angeles so no part of our city is left behind, and I’ll be a tough fiscal watchdog and make government more accountable.”

Greuel is riding a surge of momentum in the race for mayor. She recently earned the endorsement of the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL), the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC) Local 112, Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project, San Fernando Valley Young Democrats, and Teamsters Local 399.

Here's an excerpt from their endorsement:

Before Los Angeles goes to the polls next month to choose a new mayor, voters must ask themselves: Which candidate has the strongest combination of qualifications, political skill and personal character? This newspaper's editorial board has weighed those questions and found a clear answer. It's Wendy Greuel.

Greuel Receives Forceful Endorsement from National Women's Political Caucus of Los Angeles County

Los Angeles, CA — In a rare move with two women in the race for Mayor, today Wendy Greuel won a decisive victory with the announcement that the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) of Los Angeles County is backing her campaign for Mayor.

Considered one of the leading women’s advocacy organizations in Los Angeles, the National Women’s Political Caucus' endorsement is highly sought after and carries substantial weight among women voters in Los Angeles.

Beyond today's endorsement, Greuel has built up a broad base of support from more than 700 women who have joined her Women with Wendy committee. This committee is a grassroots effort aimed at mobilizing women to elect Greuel as the first woman Mayor of Los Angeles. The full list of the Women with Wendy committee is available here.

"Wendy Greuel is exceptionally and uniquely qualified to lead Los Angeles as our Mayor and the National Women's Political Caucus of Los Angeles County is incredibly proud to endorse her campaign,” said Marguerite Cooper, Chair, National Women’s Political Caucus LA County. “Los Angeles is ready for its first woman Mayor and NWPC is going to work very hard to help Wendy get elected.”

"When women vote, women win. NWPC's support sends a powerful message to voters who care about equality and women's health," said Greuel. "I am deeply honored to earn the endorsement of NWPC and continue our work together. I’ll be a mayor for all of Los Angeles, and I’ll fight to make sure every Angeleno has a chance to succeed. And as Mayor of the second largest city in the country, I intend to be a national leader to involve women in the political process."

Wendy has fought to elect more women in Los Angeles and ensure gender equality. And she has mentored women candidates running for office both in Los Angeles and across the state.

As a strong champion for women and girls, Wendy worked closely with the LAPD and advocate community to ensure the LAPD implemented all recommendations to fully eliminate the DNA rape kit backlog, and as Controller did two follow-up audits to make sure the LAPD was following through on their promise to test every DNA rape kit and bring justice to the thousands of rape victims in Los Angeles.

In the 1980’s, Wendy fought against Operation Rescue’s anti-abortion efforts to ensure all women had access to safe reproductive health care. Recently, she fought against the threats to cut funding to Planned Parenthood and urged Congress to reauthorize comprehensive Violence Against Women’s Act.

In addition to her Women with Wendy list, Greuel has earned the support of a wide range of highly respected women community and elected leaders, including: U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, Congressmember Janice Hahn, Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina, Houston Mayor Annise Parker, and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta.

Endorsement Further Validates Greuel as Top Pick Among Law Enforcement Groups

LOS ANGELES, CA – Underscoring her growing support among key law endorsement groups, today Wendy Greuel picked up a formidable endorsement from the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs (ALADS).

This endorsement provides yet another boost to the Greuel campaign and follows her recent endorsement from the Law Enforcement Association of Asian Pacifics (LEAAP). Greuel has also won highly coveted endorsements from the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) and the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC) Local 112.

Last week, Greuel was joined by firefighters as she announced her public safety plan to keep the city’s residents safe. To view the plan, click here: http://www.wendygreuel.org/public-safety/.

“The Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs is proud to give Wendy Greuel our enthusiastic endorsement,” said Floyd Hayhurst, President of ALADS. “No other candidate in the race for Mayor matches Wendy’s wide breadth of experience or her exceptional track record. Wendy has shown our members and Los Angeles’ broader law enforcement community that she’ll put public safety first. As a result, we are confident that under her leadership, LA will be safer.”

ALADS represents 8,000 members and is the largest association of deputy sheriffs and district attorney investigators in the United States.

“Having the support of Southern California's frontline sheriffs’ deputies who risk their lives every day to keep our residents safe means a great deal to me,” said Greuel. “I consider their endorsement a badge of honor. As Mayor, I’ll do everything I can to keep our residents, local neighborhoods, and streets safe comes to Los Angeles. I am truly grateful to have ALADS’ endorsement, and look forward to working with them in my campaign and beyond.”

Legendary Former LAPD Chief Backs Greuel’s Goal for 12,000 Police

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today the Wendy Greuel for Mayor campaign announced that former Los Angeles Police Chief Bill Bratton endorsed Greuel’s public safety goals.

Bratton’s support comes on the heels of Greuel’s announcement earlier today that the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs (ALADS) endorsed her Mayoral bid.

"I’m pleased to endorse Wendy Greuel’s ambitious goal to achieve 12,000 police officers in the City of Los Angeles,” said Bratton. “Per geographic mile, Los Angeles is one of the most under-policed cities in America. Wendy's support for the much needed and for too long delayed expansion and investment in the LAPD is just what Los Angeles needs to ensure an economically viable and safe city."

“It has been nearly a decade since Police Chief Bill Bratton told the people of Los Angeles that we need 12,000 Police officers to protect a city as big as ours, a goal also supported by Chief Beck. The City has made progress, but we are not there yet,” said Greuel.

Greuel added, “Chief Bratton’s endorsement of my public safety goals today highlights the growing consensus among law enforcement that LA is under-policed and that we need more officers patrolling our neighborhoods. My public safety plan aims not only to increase the number of police officers, firefighters and paramedics while reducing 911 response times, it also lays out a plan to expand crime prevention programs and develop a neighborhood-based emergency preparedness system. I'm honored to have Chief Bratton's support of my vision for a safer Los Angeles.”

Recognized as one of America’s premier police chiefs, Bill Bratton is the only person to have led two of the largest police forces in the United States, the New York City Police Department and the Los Angeles Police Department. Bratton revitalized police morale and cut crime in each of his top posts--as Chief of the New York City Transit Police, Boston Police Commissioner, New York City Police Commissioner and Chief of the LAPD.

During his tenure as Chief of Police in Los Angeles from 2002-2009, Bratton oversaw a drop in violent crimes by 41.5% and a drop of aggravated assault crimes by 52.6%.

Last week, Greuel was joined by firefighters as she announced her public safety plan to keep the city’s residents safe.

Wendy Greuel believes public safety is a top priority, and her plan allocates a minimum percentage of new revenue growth to public safety after the budget is balanced. It would set aside 20% of revenue growth for hiring new police officers, firefighters and expanding crime prevention programs. An additional 5% of new revenue will be used to create a Public Safety Trust Fund to be used for public safety emergencies or to sustain the increase in LAPD and LAFD personnel during economic downturns. The minimum allocation to public safety would only take effect in years when the City's budget is balanced and only applies to new revenue growth.

Recently, Greuel picked up endorsements from the Law Enforcement Association of Asian Pacifics (LEAAP), the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) and the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC) Local 112.

Today’s announcement follows Greuel’s announcement early today that she was endorsed by the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) of Los Angeles County. Recently Greuel was also endorsed by Los Angeles News Group, the Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) PAC, and the San Fernando Valley Young Democrats.

“Wendy has a long record of working with the Chamber to champion job creation and build a stronger economy in Los Angeles. She brings a unique combination of political leadership and knowing what it takes to run a successful family-owned business,” said L.A. Area Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. “The L.A. JOBS PAC believes that she will be a true partner on critical issues such as job creation, reforming the city’s business tax, making the tough decisions on pension reform, improving infrastructure and ending homelessness.”

“This endorsement reflects the wide-ranging support that my campaign has built throughout Los Angeles,” said Greuel. “It’s also a testament to my real-world business background and the fact that business leaders and groups understand that revitalizing our economy and creating jobs will be one of my top priorities. I am grateful for this endorsement from L.A. JOBS PAC and look forward to continuing to work to strengthen our economy and grow our middle class.”

I’m Wendy Greuel, and as Controller, the waste I found could have paid to keep our libraries open, and fund millions of dollars for afterschool programs.

As a parent with a child in our public schools, I’ll be a mayor for all of LA – every school, every child.

“LA’s school police are excited to give Wendy Greuel our strong endorsement,” said James Ream, President of the Los Angeles School Police Officers Association (LASPOA). “As a mother with a son in an LA public school, Wendy has a deep understanding of the importance of what our officers do every day. Throughout her career, Wendy has been a tireless advocate for school safety. We are proud to join forces with Wendy in her campaign for Mayor of Los Angeles.”

The Los Angeles School Police Officers Association (LASPOA) is the largest association of its kind in the nation. The group is made up of over 350 members, with approximately 250 sworn officers and 100 detectives. The goal of LASPOA is to create a tranquil and safe environment in which students and teachers can grow and learn.

“As Mayor—and as a mom with a son in the LA public schools—my number one priority is to keep ALL of our children safe, before, during, and after school. That’s why I helped establish LA’s BEST, one of the most successful afterschool programs in the country and why I am committed to keeping guns out of schools, reducing the drop out rate, and expanding vocational and career technical programs in our high schools. I am truly honored to have the support of the Los Angeles School Police Officers Association and look forward to partnering with them to keep our kids and schools safe.”

Signifying that public safety will be one of her top priorities as Mayor, recently Greuel released public safety priorities that aim to enhance residents' safety throughout all of Los Angeles. Endorsement from L.A. County Business Federation (Biz Fed) Bolsters Greuel's Mayoral Bid

LOS ANGELES, CA – Edging out her opponents in the race to win sought-after endorsements from Los Angeles' business community, today Wendy Greuel announced an endorsement from the Los Angeles County Business Federation (Biz Fed).

Biz Fed represents more than 100 business organizations with more than 185,000 businesses across the region, including more than 69,000 business owners within the City of Los Angeles.

Beyond today's endorsement, Greuel has recently won several pivotal endorsements, including the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Jobs PAC, the Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) PAC, and the Los Angeles News Group.

In addition to her recent surge in support from LA's business community, Greuel has also been endorsed by more than 20 labor organizations, which represent tens of thousands of working men and women. Greuel's wide-ranging support from both business and labor demonstrate her far-reaching and broad base of support from two key and hugely influential communities in Los Angeles.

"Wendy Greuel will make LA a global destination for businesses and entrepreneurs. She'll work to cut red tape and bureaucracy and eliminate the business tax. We're counting on her to make the tough decisions needed to balance the budget. Her experience as City Controller, a former studio executive, and her family owned business, means she gets it.," said Laura Olhasso, BizFed PAC Chair. "As a countywide alliance of business PACs, we believe Wendy will be the impactful regional leader for job creation, substantial transportation improvements, and the balanced environmental regulations we need. Wendy has our enthusiastic support for mayor."
