In a city as large and diverse as Los Angeles, it's vital that we elect a leader with a proven record of bringing people together to solve problems and get things done.
And no candidate for mayor has a better record of building coalitions than Wendy.
Wendy has received support from both labor and business, Congressman Brad Sherman and former Congressman Howard Berman, the Bruin Democrats -- and despite her close ties to UCLA, she has even been endorsed by the USC College Democrats.
Last week the blog profiled Bruins for Wendy, a group of current students dedicated to getting out the word about Wendy, so now it's time for a spotlight on the rivals across town, Trojans for Wendy.
Wendy's visit to speak to the USC College Democrats in the fall of 2012 sparked an idea among select students in the group, an idea to do more to ensure Wendy's historic election and Trojans for Wendy was born.
I had a chance to speak with two members of Trojans for Wendy recently, Kaya Masler and Brandon Cheung, on how they are “fighting on” to help elect Wendy:
Q: Where are you from?
Kaya: I'm originally from Seattle, Washington.
Brandon: Before coming to USC I lived in La Cañada, California.
Q: What year are you at USC?
Kaya: This is my third year.
Brandon: I am a freshman.
Q: What inspired you to volunteer?
Kaya: Wendy Greuel was a role model to me before she stepped foot into the mayoral race. When I was a freshman at USC she spoke at a Women's Leadership Conference that I helped host. She has a really genuine quality about her and she works harder than absolutely anyone I know. For this reason, among many others, I was inspired to work as hard as I could for her too.
Brandon: I was encouraged to get involved with the Los Angeles mayor's race from one of my professors. I am a Republican, but I chose Wendy over Kevin James and I really do believe she will make the best mayor for the city.
Q: Have you had any prior political or campaign experience?:
Kaya: This is my fifth campaign. In high school I worked on a domestic partnership rights campaign in Washington state, as well as a number of city-wide campaigns in Seattle where I grew up. I also worked as a college campus organizer on the Obama campaign during this recent presidential cycle. However, I have never been so personally motivated by a candidate as I have been by Wendy.
Brandon: This is the first time I've gotten involved with a campaign or politics before. I've always followed the news and I am a political science major so this is a great and fitting experience for me.
Q: Why do you support Wendy?
Kaya: I support Wendy because she remembers faces and respects young people. She is a model of integrity and persistence as both a person and a policy maker. Wendy is the most qualified person in the race and I'm excited to be working to help elect her on May 21.
Brandon: I appreciate that she has more business experience than her opponent. I respect her perspective on the city's sales tax and making our city more business friendly. I really connect with her work in her family's small business since my father used to own a small car rental business. I believe Wendy has a more diverse background than her opponent -- she's had accomplishments in both the public and private sectors.
