Los Angeles – The legendary and historic United Farm Workers of America has endorsed Wendy Greuel’s campaign for mayor. The legendary organization called Greuel the most qualified candidate and applauded her commitment to worker’s and immigrant’s rights.

“Wendy Greuel has been a long-time ally of the United Farm Workers. We know she has the experience to lead Los Angeles forward, and more importantly she has the courage to stand up for what is right,” said Arturo S. Rodriguez, President of the United Farm Workers of America.

“We are confident that as mayor, Wendy Greuel will continue fighting for farm worker and immigrants rights, and we are confident she will use her platform to advocate for the needs of our members. Now more than ever, as our nation works to bring comprehensive immigration reform forward, it is absolutely critical that we have a mayor like Wendy Greuel in Los Angeles who will always stand with us.”

“I am very humbled to earn the support of the United Farm Workers. For nearly 50 years, this historic organization has defended the rights of hardworking men and women and advocating for critical issues like comprehensive immigration reform. They are supporting me because they know I am uniquely qualified to lead our city, having worked in my family's small business, at DreamWorks Studios, for Mayor Tom Bradley, President Bill Clinton - and as Councilwoman and Controller. They know that I am a mom who sends her son to public schools and who will fight for every child in Los Angeles.”

The UFW joins a long list of Greuel supporters that includes civil rights icon and UFW co-founder Dolors Huerta, President Bill Clinton, Congresswomen Linda Sanchez & Maxine Waters, and Los Angeles County Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Gloria Molina.

New Poll shows Wendy in the lead

The last several days on the campaign have been really exciting -- and just a few moments ago, a new poll came out that shows what we already know: This is a very close race and Wendy has the momentum.

The new SurveyUSA results show Wendy leading 45-42.

Please chip in $5 or more to help give this campaign the resources needed to keep the momentum going all the way through Election Day.

This poll is great news, but we've had concerns about it before, and make no mistake about it -- this race is still a toss up, and it's going to come down to the work we do in the next 26 days.

I know this campaign has asked a lot of you -- and your efforts to spread the news about President Clinton's endorsement and Wendy's plan to move Los Angeles forward are what has made the difference.

But the only way we're going to make history is if we make every single day stronger than the one before.

I want to celebrate a victory on May 21, and I know you do, too. Please chip in $5 or more to help get us there:

Tie Tuesday

The bustling Van Nuys office is staffed by Ann Li and Eddie Mendoza.

In addition to speaking five languages between the two of them, Ann and Eddie have combined their political and cultural knowledge to create a unique workplace atmosphere in the office:

  • Tie Tuesday is a staff and volunteer favorite as everyone tries to look their best with ties and other business attire.
  • "We wear pink Wednesdays" was inspired by the film Mean Girls and is a fun day where staff and volunteers raid their closets for pink apparel and make phone calls to women voters in the Valley.
  • High School Night is when students from Van Nuys High School, Reseda High School, and James Monroe High School come into the office to phone bank. Recently, more than 25 students phone banked to spread the word about Wendy and this campaign.

The office's creativity is also evident in their display of memes posted amidst handmade Wendy posters and official rally signs. Meme highlights include a tie wearing cat who means business, Ryan Gosling offering phone bankers a word of advice and Futurama’s Fry contemplating life as a coffee drinker.

With themed days and internet memes posted all over the walls, the Van Nuys field office is a fun-filled environment for folks of all ages in the Valley to get down to the business of getting out the vote for Wendy Greuel.

Here’s how my Q&A went with the masterminds behind the Van Nuys office:

Ann and EddieQ: Where are you from?

Ann: I’m from Diamond Bar.

Eddie: I grew up right here in L.A., in Hollywood.

Q: What is your favorite political movie or TV show?

Ann: Goodnight and Good Luck.

Eddie: The War Room.

Q: What other political or campaign experience have you had?

Ann: I just graduated college in 2012, but I’ve had experience with Project Vote Smart and Dewey Square Group.

Eddie: Most recently I worked in a field capacity for Yes on Proposition 30 leading up to the election in November. I was also a field organizer for Jerry Brown’s 2010 campaign.

Q: Why do you support Wendy?

Ann: The most important thing for me is that Wendy is a genuine, hard working person dedicated to the idea of service, not power. She’s a proven leader with the best set of skills between the candidates. We need a mayor with a diverse background like Wendy’s to tackle our city's many issues.

Eddie: I have been a huge fan of Wendy’s for years, she was even the speaker for my graduation from CSUN. I’ve followed all her audits and I am proud of the work she's done as Controller, I voted for her in 2009 because I knew she’d follow through for all of Los Angeles.

Additionally, the City will be receiving additional funding in the near future from the passage of Proposition 30 and Measure R -- and it is important for our next mayor to be able to effectively allocate and manage these funds. Wendy has proven she can cut red tape while also bringing people together quickly to get things done. I know Wendy has the skills to move Los Angeles forward.

Luis Carmona Van Nuys Volunteer Today, the blog is highlighting the grassroots action of Luis Carmona, a senior at James Monroe High School, who is making a big difference in the Van Nuys field office.

This election is the first time Luis has gotten involved with campaigns, but he has already become a pro at phone banking -- and the staff often asks him to help train others.

Last week, I had an opportunity to talk to Luis about his experience as a volunteer, what inspired him to support Wendy, and why others should also get involved.

Q: When did you start volunteering for the campaign?

Luis: Just a few weeks ago!

Q: What inspired you to volunteer?

Luis: Eddie came to speak at my school about Wendy, her accomplishments and her vision for L.A., and volunteering at the Van Nuys office, that’s when I decided I wanted to be part of Team Wendy. I had volunteered with one of the other campaigns during the primary, but I didn’t like it very much. I haven’t been coming here too long, but I already like it better than the other campaign.

Q: Have you had any prior campaign experience?

Luis: Only during the primary for one of Wendy’s opponents.

Q: What is your favorite part about volunteering?

Luis: The Field Organizers make time in the office really fun. Ann and Eddie are great teachers, they’re patient when we are learning something new. They give us space to work on our own, but are always there for support too.

Another main reason I enjoy volunteering is being able to bring friends to volunteer with me, but also meeting new people every week as more and more high school and college students come in to help spread the word about Wendy.

Van Nuys Field Office High School Night

Q: Why do you support Wendy?

Luis: I like that she is a Valley native. Wendy will look out for the Valley and support Valley residents when she is mayor, just as she did when she was the councilmember for Council District 2. I always tell people to vote for her because she cares about quality of life in our city.

My favorite hobbies are baseball and skate boarding and I know Wendy has always been supportive of keeping up Balboa Park, Hansen Dam Park and Ritchie Valens skatepark, where I’ve spent most of my time after school.

Q: What have you learned from this experience so far?

Luis: I’ve been offered other internships, in other industries, but I chose to volunteer for Wendy’s campaign because it was the most professional. Through phone banking I’ve learned not only how to speak with many different kinds of people, but also just how important it is in an election to talk to voters one-on-one. I enjoy phone banking and I also enjoy training others so they can talk to Angelenos about why it is important to elect Wendy to be our next mayor!

Q: What do you like to do when you aren’t volunteering or focusing on your studies at James Monroe High School?

Luis: My favorite hobbies are baseball and skateboarding. There are plenty of great places in the Valley to play and skate.

Greuel Calls on City Leaders to Fully Fund Fire First Responders

Opposes Deployment Plan to Move
 Firefighters Off of Engines

Los Angeles - Wendy Greuel today joined firefighters outside Fire Station 63 to talk about the importance of fully funding fire and police, outlining specific ideas for saving taxpayer dollars that could go to LA first responders.

Greuel also laid out her concerns about a plan that would shift firefighters off of fire engines.

“At a time when we have new revenues, we must do everything we can do to make funding the fire department a top priority,” said Greuel. “Unfortunately the chief's plan to shift firefighters off of fire trucks is a band-aid solution that doesn't solve the fundamental problem. I agree we need more ambulances, but we should not do that at the price of fire safety and even worse community safety. First responders get up every day knowing it could be their last and we owe it to them to give them every tool, every resource available to do their jobs, save lives and come home to their families, and that’s what I’ll do as Mayor.”

Last year, Greuel released an audit that showed that funding cuts to the fire department had had a negative impact on response times, potentially putting Angelenos’ lives at risk. Today the Controller sent a letter to the Chief asking him to reevaluate his new staffing proposal, asking for additional analysis before implementing the plan.

Greuel has earned the endorsement of Los Angeles police and firefighters.

At the press conference, Greuel outlined just some of her ideas to save money that could be directed to fire funding, including calling on the Council to accept a 25% cut, transferring Council discretionary funds into the General Fund, and implementing her audit of the City’s workers compensation program.

Councilmember Bill Rosendahl, who has endorsed Greuel, also released a statement calling on the City Council to reject the modified deployment plan.

“Last week I wrote a letter to the chief telling him that while I respect the need to increase the number of ambulances, the firefighters at Fire Station 63 and other stations can't afford to have one less firefighter on their engines,” said Rosendahl. “Wendy has put forward clear ideas to find savings in the budget to do that. We have to do everything we can to find money in the budget to backfill those cuts from previous years so our first responders have enough people, the best equipment, and the newest technology.”

“Wendy will fight to keep our communities safe. That's why I'm supporting her, and why LA's police and firefighters support her,” Rosendahl added.

“We are proud to serve the residents of Los Angeles and will continue to do so every day. But when we lose staffing, when no new firefighters are being hired, when millions of dollars are cut out of the department – it’s going to make an impact,” said Station 63 Engineer Julie Wolf. “Already, this is one of the earliest fire seasons on record, and taking firefighters off of trucks reduces our ability to combat fires quickly and effectively.”

Speaks to Hundreds of Woman Supporters Through Google+ Hangout

Los Angeles – Wendy Greuel hosted a Women’s Night of Action, galvanizing hundreds of supporters at house parties across the city to vote and get involved in her campaign.

Greuel was joined by County Supervisor Gloria Molina, Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus Assemblymember Holly Mitchell, LAUSD Board President Mónica García, civil rights icon Dolores Huerta, Celinda Vasquez of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project, Kathy Spillar, Vice President of the Feminist Majority and former redistricting commissioner Helen Kim, as well as supporters at more than 30 simultaneous events across the city.

“I am running for Mayor to lead Los Angeles forward, and as your next Mayor will continue to fight for equal pay, women’s health, better education and to end violence against women,” said Greuel. “You heard from all of these inspiring leaders about the importance of engaging women in this race. I won my first race by 225 votes out of 30,000. That’s why it is so important that everyone get out and talk to their friends and neighbors about how important this election is for the future of Los Angeles.”

“It’s not an easy job to break the class ceiling. But I know Wendy has what it takes. With a city council that could be made up of only men, she will bring a strong and needed woman’s voice to city government when she becomes L.A.’s first woman mayor in its 163-year history.” said Supervisor Molina. “Wendy will make sure that women get equal pay for equal work and that women-owned small businesses have equal access to capital.”

“I’ve known Wendy Greuel for decades. As a mother she knows how critically important it is to partner with parents to ensure we have a quality education for all the citizens in Los Angeles,” said Huerta. “We know that the best way to get the best people elected is when we get engaged, when we talk to our neighbors, when we go to our community and say yes, it is so important to vote.”

“As a mother with a child in public school, Wendy Greuel knows we can’t have a world-class city without a world-class education system. She’ll work to improve for school safety and partner with parents and police to keep guns and gangs out of schools,” said García. “I view Wendy as a partner in school reform, someone who will fight to ensure that we have more tax dollars available to keep our libraries open and expand afterschool programs like LA’s BEST.”

Los Angeles – Former Hollywood Councilmember Mike Woo today endorsed Wendy Greuel’s campaign for Mayor.

Woo, a civic leader and dedicated educator, was the first and only Asian-American to ever serve on the Los Angeles City Council. He currently serves Dean of the College of Environmental Design at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and previously taught at the University of California, Los Angeles and Harvard.

“I’ve worked with Wendy for decades, going back to her time in Mayor Bradley’s office, and I know for a fact that she’s a strong leader with the experience and common sense to be a great Mayor,” said Woo. “Wendy has always been a dependable supporter of our community and as Mayor she will bring all sides together and get things done. She’s the best candidate to break the paralysis at City Hall and lead Los Angeles forward.”

“I’m proud to have the endorsement of a leader like Mike Woo, who broke barriers and fought for common-sense solutions at City Hall,” said Greuel. “As Mayor I will lead Los Angeles forward, bring strong leadership to deliver real change and break the paralysis at City Hall.”

Greuel has a strong base of support in the Asian-American community, and has also been supported by Congresswoman Judy Chu, Former Assemblymember George Nakano, and Community College Trustee Mike Eng.

Wendy for all of LA Located just a block from the busy intersection of Santa Monica and Sepulveda Boulevards and only two miles from UCLA, you can't get more Westside than the West LA field office.

The West LA office has a youthful energy, no doubt with a little help from the UCLA students who live nearby. Some Bruins come to the office individually while others, such as the Bruin Democrats who have officially endorsed Wendy and the Bruin Belles, volunteer as part of a group. Either way, Wendy's fellow Bruins are behind her all the way.

The anchors of this office, field staff Devin Cotter and Chris Urbano, contend that the West LA office is the best decorated of the five field offices, adding to the space's energetic vibe. Volunteers in the West LA fellows program gave it their all in preparation for the office's opening. Colorful posters with catchy slogans cover the walls, the most prominent of which stays on message by featuring the phrase "Wendy for All of Los Angeles.”

The team at the West LA office, Devin and Chris -- use their combined local and federal campaign experience to ensure that volunteers have not only a fun experience, but a productive one too:

Q: Where are you from?

Devin: I grew up in the greater Los Angeles area including Pasadena and Santa Monica.

Chris: I am originally from Pennsylvania, but I've spent a good amount of time studying and working in Ohio.

Q: What other political or campaign experience have you had?

Devin: My political experience has been exclusively within the greater LA area. I've always been attracted to local campaigning because I know that the grand plans of the President, Congress, etc. are actually implemented at the local level.

I've been a part of city council and state assembly races in the San Fernando Valley, East LA, South LA and now West LA. I'm excited that this campaign brings me full circle geographically.

I've done a bit of everything in the campaign world from field to mail, but I'm attracted to the field component of a campaign because I enjoy the chance to talk with voters! It's the best way to get a pulse for what is happening in the community.

Additionally, this is the first campaign where I'll be able to vote for my candidate!

Devin and ChrisChris: I worked on the Obama campaign in Ohio for the entirety of 2012. My first assignment was to work near Ohio State University with the goal of increasing student voter turnout. We were successful come November with more students turning out for Obama in 2012 than 2008!

I was then moved to Downtown Columbus before settling in a rural part of Eastern Ohio to focus on two specific counties for the last stretch of the race. Working in Ohio was exhilarating as it is considered by many to be the swingiest of the swing states.

Q: Why do you believe in Wendy as our next Mayor?

Devin: I've worked on campaigns for Council District 2 since Wendy held office there and it allowed me to see first hand the impact she had on the area, I'm impressed with what she's done for those communities.

She's taken the hard stances on issues and is willing to stick her neck out when it comes to important decisions. Frankly, I'm embarrassed that our city has never had a female Mayor. Wendy is more than qualified.

Chris: I actually first heard about Wendy through the news. I was in Ohio when I read an article on the Los Angeles Mayor's race and began researching the candidates. The ability for a leader to bring people together is extremely important to me. I compared each candidate's records and found that Wendy is the only candidate who can build consensus. I see Wendy as an honest broker.

I also consider a candidate's fiscal experience when deciding whom to support and I was impressed not only by Wendy's record as Controller, but also the fact that she formed a coalition of business and labor -- you really don't see that very much.

Greuel Outlines Goals for Reducing LA Traffic, Improving City’s Transit Network

Announces endorsement from SOHA President Richard Close

Los Angeles – Overlooking the busy 405/101 interchange’s morning rush hour, Wendy Greuel outlined her priorities for reducing Los Angeles traffic and creating a seamless transportation network across the City.

Last year, gridlock cost the City of Los Angeles more than $10 billion in wasted time and fuel. And just last week an annual congestion study showed that that Los Angeles once again has the worst traffic in the country. The 405/101 interchange is also the most congested interchange in the United States.

Greuel also announced the endorsement of Richard Close, President of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association*.

“No matter your zip code, chances are that you also spend your commute stuck in equally bad traffic. This never-ending traffic is not only deeply frustrating – it also undermines the health of our economy and the public,” said Greuel. “We can and must do better to reduce gridlock in Los Angeles. It’s fundamental to our quality of life. That’s why my blueprint to lead Los Angeles forward lays out concrete set of proposals to create a truly multi-modal system that is seamless and efficient, regardless of what mode you travel by.”

Greuel said reducing traffic and creating a more seamless and modern transportation network will be a top priority, part of her 36-page policy blueprint, Leading LA Forward.

Greuel called for enforcing bans on rush hour construction, creating additional anti-gridlock zones, adding left-hand turn signals, expediting rail projects like Subway to the Sea and the Regional Connector, prioritizing the City’s bike plan, and focusing on repaving streets and filling potholes.

"Traffic and congestion impact our neighborhoods and our residents every single day, from parents trying to get home to their kids, to employees trying to get to work, to moving valuable goods from the port or the airport to other parts of the region,” said Councilmember Bill Rosendahl, who joined Greuel at the press conference. “Traffic costs us billions of dollars, and we need strong leadership to solve this challenge immediately. Wendy will fight to unclog our roads and highways by implementing common sense reforms and working toward a 21st century transportation network."

“Wendy is a resident, homeowner, parent, small business owner and former Councilmember for the San Fernando Valley, and I know her as a tough fiscal watchdog, someone who will bring the strong leadership we need to lead Los Angeles forward. With Wendy Greuel as Mayor, the San Fernando Valley will never be forgotten at City Hall,” said Close. “Wendy lives in the Valley and so she has a unique appreciation for the challenges the Valley faces, and will make fighting gridlock and building a seamless public transportation system a key priority.”

Los Angeles Daily News: Wendy Greuel is the one to lead L.A. back

$

Earlier today, the Los Angeles Daily News editorial board endorsed Wendy Greuel as the best candidate to lead Los Angeles forward.

Check out some of the highlights below, and then share this news with your friends to help spread the word:

The Los Angeles News Group editorial board repeats what it said before the primary: Wendy Greuel has the experience, know-how and personal qualities to be a fine mayor.

Greuel's government experience is strong. She is the city controller and a former city councilwoman from the San Fernando Valley. She worked in the Clinton administration in the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where her work was vital to getting the Valley back on its feet after the 1994 earthquake. Former President Clinton said in endorsing Greuel: "I think if every voter in Los Angeles saw her the way ... people who know her well do, she would win. "

Greuel also has experience in private business as an entertainment-industry executive.

All of this has made her - since before the primary - the one candidate in the race with seasoning in citywide office, in government beyond L.A. City Hall, and in the business world.

It has earned Greuel a range of endorsements, some of which have actually put her on the defensive. Garcetti has hammered away on the notion that Greuel's backing from public employee unions, including millions of dollars in independent campaign spending by the union representing Department of Water and Power workers, would put her in their pocket as mayor. This is a predictable piece of political jujitsu by Garcetti - or hypocrisy, since the city councilman surely would have taken those endorsements and donations if offered.

Besides, Garcetti has labor backing too, from teacher's unions, including United Teachers Los Angeles, city hall employee unions and trade unions that do business with City Hall.

Crucially, Greuel also has endorsements from business groups such as the L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce, L.A. County Business Federation, and Valley Industry and Commerce Association. They wouldn't back Greuel over Garcetti if they thought she'll be a pushed around by unions. Valley residents remember that as a councilwoman, she stood up to the Service Employees International Union on the Providence Holy Cross Hospital expansion.

L.A. doesn't need another smooth talker. It needs a mayor for hard times, to make sometimes unpopular moves to pull the city off the fiscal brink. Wendy Greuel can be that mayor. Voters should elect her on May 21.

Los Angeles – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi announced today that he is endorsing Wendy Greuel for Mayor of Los Angeles.

Muratsuchi, whose district includes the Harbor Gateway and Harbor City, previously served on the Torrance School Board and as a prosecutor with the California Department of Justice. He is the current Chair of the Assembly Veterans Affairs committee and serves on the Budget committee.

“As a mother with a child in public school, Wendy knows we can’t have a world-class city without a world-class education system,” said Assemblymember Muratsuchi. “She's run a small business and worked as an executive in the entertainment industry, and knows we need to make Los Angeles more business friendly. She will fight to make sure that Los Angeles is more business-friendly and that we invest in our public infrastructure and key engines of economic activity like our ports and airports.”

“Assemblymember Muratsuchi has been a leader who delivers real results for his constituents throughout his whole career, from improving schools to protecting the public as a prosecutor. I’m proud to have his endorsement,” said Greuel. “As Mayor, I will get our economy going again and create good-paying jobs by bringing business and labor together, making Los Angeles more business friendly and investing in key infrastructure, especially our ports and airports. I will be the strong leader we need to lead Los Angeles forward.”

Greuel has a strong base of support in the Asian Pacific Islander community, and has also been supported by Congresswoman Judy Chu, former Hollywood Councilmember Mike Woo, former Assemblymember George Nakano, and Community College Trustee Mike Eng.

USC College Democrats joins Bruin Democrats, California State University, Northridge Young Democrats, San Fernando Valley Young Democrats, Young Latino Democrats of the San Fernando Valley, and Black Los Angeles Young Democrats in endorsing Greuel for Mayor.

This is truly a unique event in our history – not only are we agreeing with UCLA Democrats, but we’re supporting a UCLA graduate!” said Catherine Shieh, President of USC Democrats. “For college graduates, the prospect of finding a job in these tough economic times is a major concern, and we are confident that Wendy brings the leadership to lead Los Angeles forward and create new opportunities for all students.”

“I am proud to have earned the endorsement of USC College Democrats, and young people across the city,” said Greuel. “As Mayor, I will leverage my experience in the public and private sector to create technology zones around our local schools and universities, to help Los Angeles capture the jobs of tomorrow. Volunteer Spotlight: Bruins for Wendy

Wendy Greuel has never been content with sitting on the sidelines, not while student body President of John F. Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, not as an undergraduate interning for Mayor Tom Bradley while at UCLA, not as Councilwoman of Council District 2 in the San Fernando Valley, not as City Controller and certainly not as the next Mayor of Los Angeles. Wendy's determination is mirrored by a group of current Bruins who, inspired by Wendy's vision for our city, have recently formed a campus group, Bruins for Wendy.

Bruins For Wendy Bruins for Wendy has one goal, to help spread the word about Wendy to as many Angelenos as possible before May 21. Students meet every Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. in Kerckhoff Hall, Room 515. Cell phones, laptops and Leading LA Forward policy plans abound as the students draw on their own reasons for supporting Wendy when convincing fellow voters to do the same.

I had the chance to sit in on a recent Bruins for Wendy phone bank and this is what I learned from my fellow Bruins Aurelia Friedman, Brooke Cullison, and Cathi Cohen:

Q: Where are you from?

Aurelia: I'm born and raised in Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades.
Brooke: I'm originally from Long Beach.
Cathi: Before coming to UCLA I lived up north in the Eastbay area.

Q: What year are you at UCLA?

Aurelia: I'm a first year.
Brooke: This is my second year.
Cathi: I'm about to finish my third year.

Q: Have you had any prior political or campaign experience?

Aurelia: Yes, I interned in Councilmember Bill Rosendahl's office for a year and a half. Also, before starting at UCLA I was the youth representative on the Pacific Palisades Community Council. I actually interned simultaneously for Councilmember Rosendahl's field office and Wendy's campaign this past summer. I'm so glad he has been such a great supporter of Wendy!

Brooke: I haven't, this is my first campaign though I've been interested in local politics for some time.

Cathi: This is also my first time being involved with a campaign, but I know it won't be my last. My experience interning in the Office of the Solicitor General while participating in UCLA's Center for American Politics and Public Policy (CAPPP) quarter in Washington (D.C.) program as well as for the San Francisco District Attorney's Office inspired me to pursue a career as a District Attorney. So I'll eventually be campaigning myself!

Q: What is your favorite part about volunteering?

Aurelia: I like when I see results from my volunteer efforts. For example, helping to fundraise or convincing a voter Wendy is the way to go when they mark their ballot. I was so excited when I helped bring in a $300 contribution while interning in the summer!

Bruins for Wendy Dorm Room DecorationsBrooke: I like meeting other Wendy supporters and finding out their reasons for believing in Wendy. I've found members of Team Wendy to be very supportive, not fair weather fans in the least. I've especially enjoyed the camaraderie of volunteering, I've made new friends in the process including new Bruins!

Cathi: I've enjoyed the canvassing I've done so far. I'm a political science major and it's been great to learn outside of the classroom. This kind of experience in the community can't be taught in a lecture hall.

Q: Why do you support Wendy?

Aurelia: Before I began interning for Wendy I saw her everywhere in my community. I was particularly inspired after she delivered the keynote speech for a Running Start conference I attended (Running Start is an organization focused on getting young women involved with politics). Wendy encourages others, especially young women, to pursue their dreams. I know it's still hard for women to compete in the political arena today, for instance when it comes to fundraising, but Wendy's encouragement has definitely inspired me to follow my dreams.

Brooke: I took time to look into Wendy before I committed to supporting her. I love the idea of a woman mayor for Los Angeles, but with Wendy it's more than that, she has more to bring to the table. I decided to support Wendy because I support what she stands for, particularly education reform which is an important issue for me. I believe her varied background and experience attending a public university sets her apart. I know Wendy will be able to use her personal experience to truly understand what is best for our city.

Cathi: I believe in Wendy's vision for Los Angeles. The issues important to me are public transportation, education and government spending. I'm from the San Francisco Bay area and we have the BART public transit system. I'd like to be able to get around Los Angeles just as easily as I can at home. I trust that Wendy will make this kind of hassle-free transportation a reality. It's important to me that the City cuts unnecessary spending. Wendy has proven as City Controller that she has a handle on how to do this; the next mayor needs to have a strong fiscal background.

Aurelia, Brooke and Cathi are committed to getting Wendy elected. Join them and other Bruins Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m. in Kerckhoff Hall, Room 515. You can also join them on Facebook at Bruins for Wendy.

P.S. Don't miss special guest Rafer Johnson, a Bruin, Olympic Gold Medalist, and Wendy supporter who will be phone banking with Bruins for Wendy this Thursday!

Wendy Greuel visits Tolliver's Barbershop in South Los Angeles

Wendy Greuel at Tollivers Wendy visited Tolliver's Barbershop to take question and chat with local Angelenos for nearly two hours at the South Los Angeles institution the other day.

And here's what the Los Angeles Times had to say about her visit:

Not since Mayor Jim Hahn did the Slauson Shuffle at Tolliver's in 2005 have I seen a politician as comfortable there as Greuel. She didn't do the shuffle, but she settled into one of the barber chairs and held court late Friday afternoon, apologizing for not bringing her 9-year-old son along as she had on her previous visit.

"When I've discussed it with my friends who are into politics, they all say, 'I've known her for a long time and I trust her,'" Tolliver told me.

With less than two weeks to go, the way we win is by getting out the vote in our communities -- at the door, on the phone, and in local barbershops -- sign up to volunteer today.

Get to know the South LA field office

Located at 5444 Crenshaw Boulevard, the South LA field office has some big history behind it. The office, led by field team Jon Colmenares and Nii-Quartelai Quartey, housed the Crenshaw field office for President Barack Obama's 2008 and 2012 campaigns. The space has some magic.

South LA Field Office Entrance> Jon and Nii-Quartelai describe the office as warm, diverse, culturally competent and vibrant – reflective of the community it resides within. Folks who come in to volunteer represent different communities, young, old, LGBT, Latino, African American.

The office's prayer request list is just one example of how a strong sense of community has been formed in this field office. A prominent first lady of a local church was asked to pray for a voter she was speaking to while phone banking, thereafter the office began the prayer request, adding any voter who requests the South LA team to keep him or her in their prayers. With community involvement being a staple of the office it's not unusual for high profile endorsers such as Congresswoman Maxine Waters or L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas to stop in and say hello.

One of the most exciting days recently at 5444 Crenshaw was a rally barbeque with Wendy, Supervisor Ridley-Thomas and Lorraine Bradley, daughter of Mayor Tom Bradley. Volunteers were ecstatic to meet all three. Supporters who had never met Wendy in person commented on how down to earth she is, even preparing her own hot dog for lunch at the barbeque station.

I had a chance to visit Jon and Nii-Quartelai and the volunteers of South L.A. this past weekend; here is what I learned from my visit:

NQQ and Jon>Q: Where are you from?

Nii-Quartelai: I am originally from the San Francisco Bay area. I came to Los Angeles to attend USC as an undergraduate and I've been here ever since.

Jon: I'm a Valley native and I still live there!

Q: What other political or campaign experience have you had?

Nii-Quartelai: I've worked on a number of campaigns as well as working in both the private and public sectors. I cut my teeth in L.A. politics working for former L.A. School Board Member David Tokofsky directly out of college. As far as campaign work goes I've worked on the Yes on Measure GG Inglewood School Bond Campaign, West Hollywood No on Measure A Campaign Against Illegal Billboards, Karen Bass for Congress, Barack Obama for President (2008 and 2012), Yes on Proposition 11 California Redistricting Reform Initiative, and Ron Dellums for Mayor Campaign in Oakland.

Outside of campaigning I've worked in relation to non-profit organizations as the Community Engagement Advisor at the Courage Campaign and founder of The Sankofa Group for Civic Engagement. Additionally I've stayed active in community organizations as Political Vice-President of Stonewall Democratic Club, Board Vice-President of the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Campaign Board Member at The Victory Fund, and Community Funding Board Member at Liberty Hill Foundation.

Jon: I've worked on many nationally targeted races since graduating from college in 2010. This is my seventh race in a field capacity.

South LA Field Office Prayer Request
Q: Why do you believe in Wendy as our next Mayor?

Nii-Quartelai: Before joining the campaign as staff I had gotten to know both Wendy and Eric professionally. They are both good people, both good public servants. However, we have to consider what the City needs. I've studied Wendy's record and it's decades in the making. No one can deny the breadth of experience Wendy brings to the table and her experience lends itself to managing the challenges Los Angeles faces today. This is why I am here!

We've seen recently with President Barack Obama and now locally with Wendy that change is hard when you're not part of political establishment, when you don't have famous last name, it's hard. But with Wendy's years of hard work she's earned it, she's earned her seat at the table! She has the qualifications from her time in Mayor Tom Bradley's Administration all the way up to her current work as City Controller -- she's earned the chance to show this City what she can do as our next chief executive.

Jon: I relate to her as Valley native to Valley native. I was there for the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, my family was directly affected. Our home suffered much damage such as partial collapse, shattered items, etc. Luckily my sister had moved in time, but her head board fell to the exact spot she had been sleeping moments before. In such a time of chaos Wendy's work and leadership meant a great deal to me personally. She played a critical role in getting the resources my family and families like mine needed to get back on our feet after the disaster.

In addition, Wendy has the experience behind her to lead our city. She is the candidate with broad support – business, labor, young, old, etc. She's proven what she can accomplish.

Q: What is your favorite political movie or television show?

Nii-Quartelai: My favorite show is definitely Scandal, but Philadelphia with Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks is the political movie that has had a great impact on my work and world view. Its depiction and intertwining of issues such as same-sex relationships, HIV/AIDS and overcoming the notions of prejudice within individuals has left its mark on me since the first time I saw it.

Jon: For movie I'd have to go with Ides of March. As for t.v., when I have time I like to catch up on episodes of Political Animals and Veep.

Greuel Celebrates Mother’s Day with Latina Leaders and Community Members

Los Angeles – Wendy Greuel was joined by civil rights leader and mother Dolores Huerta and LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia today, to commemorate Mother’s Day and highlight the importance for women to get involved in this critical and historic election. Celebrating the holiday on the day when most Latinos celebrate, the women also met with community leaders and volunteers to thank them for their involvement and remind them to get out the vote with just 11 days left until the May 21st election.

The leaders met with reporters at the Placita Olvera, and then enjoyed Arroz con leche (rice pudding) and Mariachi music with community members and volunteers at Greuel’s Boyle Heights office. Greuel stressed that she is the most qualified candidate in this race, with public and private sector experience. She also said that, with recent polls showing she has the momentum in this election, she looks forward to making history and becoming the first “Mom-in-Charge” to lead Los Angeles as Mayor.

“One of the things that makes mothers so special is that they are fighters, and that is what I want to do for Los Angeles as Mayor - I want to fight for all of you. So if you want to make sure we have better schools, more good paying jobs and safer streets - put a Mom in charge. Watch what happens,” Greuel said.

“Wendy Greuel has the experience and the commitment to lead Los Angeles forward, having worked at her family's small business, at DreamWorks Studios, for Mayor Tom Bradley and President Bill Clinton, and as the taxpayer’s watchdog as City Controller. But she also brings the passion and dedication of a Mom to the job of Mayor, a focus on key issues that impact our families and the honesty and integrity to bring people together to lift up our communities,” said Huerta.

“As an advocate for kids and families in Los Angeles, I know Wendy will work tirelessly to improve our city. She is both a leader and mother, who will advocate for school reform, and for more tax dollars to keep libraries and parks open, and to expand successful programs like LA’s Best, that keep our kids safe. That’s why Wendy has the momentum in this race - because we know she will be a voice for change,” Garcia said.
